For extra flavor we add Red Hot Chili Peppers, G Love and the Special Sauce, Phish, Black Eyed Peas, String Cheese Incident, and serve it with Cake, Cream, and Disco Biscuits. Keep it chilled and serve it hot = Why Not Astronaut.

Sep 4, 2009 - 9:00pm- Midnight - Pub Events

Simien the Whale was born on the night of 0ctober 28, 2006 at Czar's 505 in St. Joseph, Michigan while opening for Troll for Trout. Since then, Simien the Whale has been working to spread their music throughout the west/mid Michigan area and beyond. The trio released their first EP entitled "1982" in March of 2008. The record has been embraced by local and regional radio stations, and was even honored by WYCE with 2 "Jammie Award" nominations (Best New Local Artist, Listener's Choice Award). An MSU Radio DJ declared the song "Dirty" one of the best songs of 2008 on their blog for the Impact show "The Basement".Simien the Whale's fan base has grown significantly since the latter half of 2008 as radio promotion and show scale have increased. Both "Re-Energized in a Man's Life," and the quirky Kriss, Kross reprise "Jump" have regular airplay on several Michigan radio stations. Always expanding their catalog, Simien the Whale has returned to the studio to record a full-length album, due out Winter 2009.

The Lynn Thompson Band (66 E. 8th St. Holland, MI)

Sep 18, 2009 - 9pm-Midnight - Live Music at the Pub

Led by the 12 string guitar-playing singer songwriter Lynn Thompson, this band features a roster of great talent that brings an unusually professional texture to a local effort. Aside from the obvious Dave Matthews angle, the band has moments of Morphine, with beefy riffs and bari sax, along with Thompson's direct lyrical style. Overall, a cool funk moves through the band, punctuated by the occasional rock grind and harmony-driven layer of horns. Choosen as the number one band to see at the Festival of the Arts 2009 by the Grand Rapids Press. Even thought they are an original band they cover songs such as; Who Can It Be, Bakers Street, Use Me, Modern Love, and much more. If you want to dance, get down funky, or experience some great musicians, this is the band to see.

Vox Maui (66 E. 8th St. Holland, MI)

Sep 25, 2009 - 10pm-1am - Live Music at the Pub

(The Real Detroit Says....) Here we have a sharp, tremendously talented East Side trio who, at their most settled, would fit into post-rock realms of jazz/rock hybrids like Tortoise or the Sea & Cake. With guitar-heavy and inventive melodies, their sparse but unerringly profound lyrics of a nihilistic and overly technology-laden world amazingly coincide with their exceptional harmonies. These brief poeticisms are just jumping off points so that the masterful, freewheeling instrumentalists can cyclone into beautiful spurts of tightly synched improvisation. All the subtle explosions captured here only hint at the marvelous jazz-rock torrents of their live shows.

Maybe August (66 E. 8th St. Holland, MI)

Oct 23, 2009 - 9pm-Midnight - Live Music at the Pub

Maybe August exists mostly to give life to their original songs. Though each song has one or two primary songwriters, every member of the band contributes to writing & arranging each song. With influences like John Hiatt, Dave Mathews, Glen Phillips, & Bare Naked Ladies, the songwriting bar is set high. Their songs are well-crafted stories & observations that attempt to connect to the lives of listeners. Real people know a few things about life -- it's not always pretty and nice; sometimes people are ugly and unkind. Love, stability, and even sanity are fluid; and true happiness is transient. It's the beauty of interpretation that makes the writing (and life) poignant, powerful, and captivating. maybe august is music for people who have lived real lives and have stories to tell. People who work all day, sometimes play at night, raise families in between, and live the hell out of every today.

Funktion (66 E. 8th St. Holland, MI)

Oct 30, 2009 - 10pm-1am - Live Music at the Pub

Funktion, the 7-man band based in Kalamazoo, MI, delivers their dare-you-not-to-dance blend of funk and soul with a hip-hop beat that isn’t afraid to straddle genres – including rock and jazz. This lends to a gritty and some times flat-out rambunctious flavor in their live shows. Whether they’re entertaining in a small basement bar or a Chicago club, the rhythm section lays down a skillful, yet simple groove, while up from the center comes a shockwave of energy from the driving percussion and soulful vocals. Don’t worry, the horn line isn’t just for show. They provide slinky, yet powerful grooves, subtle vocal harmonizing and when the mood strikes, some dance moves that beg the audience to join them. Funktion’s high-energy performances are as intoxicating as whatever’s on tap. Night after night their live shows bring the kind of soul-stirring experience usually reserved for Sunday mornings. - Emily Haine
