Knickerbocker Gin is a vibrant, aromatic spirit twice distilled and infused with flavors from more than a dozen herbs and spices. Generous amounts of juniper-berries contribute a bright citrus and evergreen body, bursting with flavor before a clean, dry finish. Named for the Dutch explorers of a new world, Knickerbocker celebrates modern exploration in the historic realm of distilling.

A straight-malt whiskey, it begins with a brewer’s mash coaxing sugars from malted barley into a liquid wash. This wash is twice distilled and aged in new American oak with a heavy char. Notes of vanilla and clove arise from the slightly caramelized spirit leading to a classic American-oak finish.

Introducing: Four Witches

April Release

As we kick off our Summer seasonal, Golden Cap saison, we’re excited to roll out a single-batch seasonal, “Four Witches” black saison. It’s an opportunity to explore flavor within a remarkably interpretive style. Saisons are intriguing beers as they have traditional roots, yet are a delicious forum for variation and development.

The Four Witches art, illustrated by Kyle Bice, develops on Golden Cap’s theme, with a nod to Wizard of Oz, as L. Frank Baum wrote the book while summering in Holland, MI. White and dark roasted wheat provide deceptively delicious body, and a playful reference to Oz’s contrast between good and wicked witches. Caramel rye and barley continue the story, along with a unique yeast character and mild spicing.

**Four Witches will be brewed for release this April, and packaged in 4-pack 12 oz bottles.

Last Shipped:

12 oz. – Will ship in April 2012

Estimated Next Ship:
12 oz. – April 2013

New Holland Brewing Co.’s production facility (684 Commerce Ct.) is getting a major makeover!

Five 400 bbls (net) fermenters were delivered on Wednesday, May 2 from Germany. These tanks will allow us to almost triple our fermentation capacity. The outdoor fermenters are planned to be running by mid June. These fermenters will increase New Holland Brewing Company’s capacity in order to keep up with demand. Because most of the indoor facilities are currently occupied, the outdoor fermenters will allow production to continue to reach the mouths of our consumers!

A concrete base outside was poured and the tanks are actually installed in the ground and will be finished with tile. After the tile is down, electricity will be introduced to the tanks in order to control lighting, actuators and controllers for things like tank temperature and pressure sensors to detect how full the tanks are. From there, piping is installed which allows NHBC to fill, empty, clean, pitch yeast, and discharge Carbon Dioxide from the tanks. New Holland employees are working on designing the most effective piping system for the tanks which will be built and installed on site. After this, coolant piping is also figured into the system in order to keep the tanks at the correct temperature for beer.

As far as weather-proofing goes, the tanks are all jacketed, which means that NHBC can control the temperature that the fermentation occurs at. What allows these tanks to be outside, rather than indoors, is their heavy duty insulation that will prohibit the tanks from being influenced by outdoor temperatures, such as those chilly Michigan winters!

Along with outdoor fermenters, the north side location has also received two new bright tanks which hold 200 barrels and are set to receive two more later this month. The two tanks already acquired were moved over and reconnected to the cooling system around the end of February, 2012 which was a week-long process that will have to be done again when the next two come. The four new tanks were made by MetalCraft and will sit alongside New Holland’s other tanks, four of which were made by JVNW and two by Bohemian.

Celebrate the madness of our award winning IPA and our Fifteen year anniversary!

June 16th

Street Party: 12pm to 10pm
(Located on College Ave. between 8th and 9th Street)

Pure Michigan Cookout: 12pm to 4pm
Details to come!

LIVE MUSIC:

Delilah DeWylde & The Lost Boys-4pm

Delilah DeWylde and the Lost Boys got its start in 2005. Just like rockabilly originators Johnny Cash, Bill Haley and Carl Perkins, this Michigan trio cut its teeth on steel-guitar driven country in the style popularized by Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb and Webb Pierce. But the draw of the big beat was irresistible, and over time the band’s approach has become sharper and tighter. Not self-consciously retro, Delilah and the Lost Boys remain committed to hand-crafted American music that stands at the crossroads of creativity and craftsmanship, liberally drawing from honky tonk country, rockabilly and surf music. Delilah and the Lost Boys come out on stage looking and sounding like a step back in time. Dressed to the nines in the tradition of pre-color television, the band thrills audiences across the Midwest with its spirited performances.

Steppin’ In It-6pm

Rare indeed when a collection of songs creates an entire world. Yet that’s exactly what transpires with Steppin’ In It’s “Simple Tunes for Troubled Times.” Sonically painting with a pleasant array of old time country swing and blues, this Lansing, Michigan, quartet brilliantly updates a resurging American musical genre. Led by composer/guitarist Joshua Davis, traditional roots music is celebrated here by plaintive vocals and sweet harmonies, plus musicianship that is positively staggering. The number of instruments manned by Davis, upright bassist Dominic John Suchyta, steel guitarist Joe Wilson and the harmonica-playing Andy Wilson includes trombone, trumpet, Cajun accordion, dobro, slide guitar, Cajun fiddle, clawhammer banjo.

HEADLINER:
The Dynamites feat. Charles Walker-8pm

Soul music is here to stay, and it’s still evolving. The Dynamites Featuring Charles
Walker are living proof. Lead singer Charles Walker doesn’t imitate, emulate or try to
resuscitate a bygone nostalgic era. He is soul, the real deal, still carrying the flaming
torch of funk and soul lit back in the late 60’s at the Apollo Theater where he opened up
for icons like James Brown and Wilson Pickett.

Just as Ry Cooder thrust the nearly-forgotten Cuban heroes of son and bolero into
international fame on the album Buena Vista Social Club , so have The Dynamites
proven that national treasures of soul and funk like Charles Walker still walk amongst us.
What’s more, the fresh songwriting approach of Bill Elder , a.k.a. Leo Black , continues
to push the deep funk envelope, propelling Walker to sound equally at home singing a
scorching hot, up-tempo rocker as he does on a heart wrenching 60’s-style soul ballad.

The Dynamites aren’t alone. The burgeoning wave of the deep funk and soul movement
is turning heads. A 2008 article in USA Today included The Dynamites in the short list
of “acts that are wowing live audiences coast to coast with fresh songs and slamming
performances.” The article also got it right in asserting the relevancy and freshness of
the deep funk movement: “These critically lauded acts aren’t cover bands, paying
homage to old heroes. They’re creating their own legacies in a genre that the industry
seemingly shelved long ago.”

Laith Al-Saadi-11pm

Laith Al-Saadi has been a staple of the Detroit music scene for most of his adult life. Born and raised in Ann Arbor, MI, this talented 30 year old began singing at age 4 and began playing guitar at 13. At 15 years old Al- Saadi formed his first blues band, “Blue Vinyl”. By the time he was 18 years old they had opened for Blues greats like Buddy Guy, Luther Allison, Son Seals, and Taj Mahal and toured the Netherlands. After graduating from High School, Al-Saadi attended the University of Michigan where he recieved a degree in Jazz Guitar and Bass. In 2006, Al-Saadi was crowned “King of the Blues” for the Northern Region of the United States by Guitar Center. This makes him one of the top 4 Blues guitarists in the Country.

It’s that time of year again! The time where the tulips bloom, funnel cake stands pop up down eighth street, and the only form of shoes people seem to be wearing are wooden ones. Tulip Time is just around the corner (May 5-12).

Tulip Time actually began as a small festival. The idea came from a high school biology teacher who proposed her idea of commemorating Holland’s Dutch heritage. Her proposal was accepted and in 1929, the City of Holland planted it’s first crop of 100,000 tulips. Because there was an overwhelming amount of visitors, the festival was repeated and in later years the number of days were lengthened. Holland’s Tulip Time Festival was even named in the Top 20 events in the world by the International Festival and Events Association and one of the Top 100 events in North America by the American Bus Association 21 times! To find out more about the history of Tulip Time, click here.

But this year is a little different. Because of the especially warm winter that West Michigan received, the tulips have already bloomed! However, “the Holland community sees this as a tremendous opportunity to lengthen the annual celebration of the tulips.” The Downtown Holland Organization is encouraging people to come a week or two early to see all of the gorgeous tulips. In exchange, many hotels are offering excellent discounts on stays. Click here to see the discounts from local hotels.

During the week of the Tulip Festival there will be dutch dancing, parades, carnivals, Dutch Marktplaats, music, and of course Dutch Village and Windmill Island will both be open for tours exploring Dutch heritage and the tulip farms. Click here to see the full list of Tulip Time events.

New Holland Brewing Company Restaurant & Pub will have Red Tulip on tap for the festival. Red Tulip is a red ale that features rich and smooth flavors of malted barley, balanced by underlying hints of dark fruit. Also, new this year to the Tulip Time Festival will be “The Beer Pad” across the street from the pub! NHBC is a sponsor of the event and will have beer on tap from Wednesday until Saturday. It will be a great place to have a beer and enjoy some carnival food! There is no cover for this event and people of all ages are allowed in The Beer Pad. Andy Frasco will be playing at the Pub on Friday night, May 11th and Otis will be playing Saturday night, the 12th. Both bands will be on from 10pm-1am. To view the entire live music schedule at the pub, click here.

Alongside these events, NHBC will partake in the Wednesday and Saturday parades on the bike-n-bar! Because the Pub is one of the best and busiest places to watch the parades, you can enjoy a seat in the Fairbanks room or on the front patio to see the bike-n-bar go by! Last but not least, New Holland’s General Manager and Partner, Dave White, will be walking in his Dutch costume for the LAST TIME this year! Be sure to give him a big shout-out for all of the hard work he’s done on the Tulip Time Board of Directors for the past six years. Thanks Dave!

The ADI, or American Distilling Institute, was founded in 2003, “to promote the American craft distillers that are producing the finest quality artisan spirits and to give participating distillers valuable, unbiased, third-party feedback on the quality and process of their spirits.” Because the number of craft distillers in the U.S. has more than tripled, the ADI seeks to inform the public about this industry. Craft distillers focus on quality rather than quantity, they strive to educate the consumer rather than supply them with cheap alcohol. Click here to learn more about the American Distilling Institute.

Each year, the ADI holds it’s annual conference and judging of craft American spirits. This past weekend, New Holland Artisan Spirits sent spirits to be judged at the conference. Members of the New Holland Partner Team, Walter Catton, Brad Kamphuis, and Fred Bueltmann were all at the conference. After much anticipating and two days of blind tasting from judges the results were in – the awards that New Holland Artisan Spirits received were as follows:

	•	In the “Malt Whiskey” category, Double Down Barley took home a Bronze medal
•	In the “Straight Malt Whiskey” category, Zeppelin Bend Whiskey won Silver
•	and in the “Artisan Merchant Bottled Rum” category, Freshwater Huron Rum won Silver and Best of Category!!!

Gold, silver, and bronze medals were given along with certificates for spirits judged worthy of recognition. There were multiple categories for Whiskey, Rum, and Brandy. Both Walter Catton and Brad Kamphuis were there to accept the awards on behalf of New Holland Artisan Spirits. A total of 244 entries were submitted from 100 distilleries across the nation. “New Holland is excited to see the vibrance of the Craft Distilling industry. The energy behind the conference and competition was compelling and encouraging. We’re thrilled to be recognized by our peers and are especially happy to see our whiskeys, aka “brown spirits” which are a challenge for young distillers, continue to medal” said Beervangelist, Fred Bueltmann.
